Voting Accessibility

Iowa law requires all polling places to be accessible to all voters. This includes the voting area as well as the parking areas, walkways, and building entrances.

For more information on voting accessibility in Iowa, visit: Help America Vote Act (HAVA).

Curbside Voting

If you are unable to enter the building where the polling place is located because of a disability, curbside voting is available at each precinct.

Two precinct election officials, one from each political party may take voting materials out to you in your vehicle. You can then mark your ballot in your vehicle.

You do not need to contact anyone ahead of time; however, you may want to call your county auditor ahead of time or bring someone with you to tell the precinct workers that you will need to vote in your car.

Voting with Assistance

If you need help marking your ballot, you may choose any person to help you except your employer, your employer's agent, or an officer/agent of your union. If you would like help from the precinct election officials, one official from each political party will assist you.

You will be asked to sign a form showing you asked for help. If you are not physically able to sign the forms, you can use a rubber stamp or mark to sign. You may also ask for assistance or have someone sign the form on your behalf as long as it is in your presence and with your permission.

Voting Equipment

Each precinct in Iowa also has an AutoMARK for voters who need assistance in marking their ballots. The AutoMARK is a ballot-marking device. To mark their ballots, voters use features on the AutoMARK such as a touch screen, an audio component, and/or a sip and puff element to select their candidates.

The AutoMARK will then complete the ovals on the ballot. It also allows voters the opportunity to review and change their vote before the ballot is marked. The AutoMARK does not count ballots.

All voting instructions at the polls are printed in large type.
