Secretary of State Mauro Certifies Election Results

Statewide Turnout Total Officially Breaks 2004 Record

DES MOINES – After completion of the county canvasses, Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro today joined the members of the Executive Council to convene as the State Canvassing Board to certify election results from the 2008 General Election.

Statewide, a record 1,546,453 voters participated in this year’s General Election – nearly 25,000 more than four years ago (1,521,966). Percentage turnout sits at 72-percent – tying 2004. Of the 1.54 million total voters, a record 557,000 opted to vote early by absentee ballot.

“These numbers show Iowans remained enthusiastic through the caucuses right up until the General Election,” said Secretary of State Mauro. "More people participated in this election than any other in the past. Iowans should be proud of our voting process and be proud of the fact they made history this election.”

There are four races (House District 1, 8, 37 and Senate District 10) that have not been finalized at the county level. Those races will be certified a week from today (Mon., Dec. 1) in another meeting of the State Canvassing Board.

Official results can be viewed on the Secretary of State’s Web site, by visiting www.sos.state.ia.us.
