SECRETARY OF STATE MAURO REMINDS VOTERS TO HEAD TO THE POLLS ON Friday Marks Deadline to Request Absentee Ballots by Mail and In-Person DES MOINES – Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro reminds eligible voters to participate in the upcoming statewide school board elections on Tuesday, Sept. 8. “Voters need to take note of a couple of things for Tuesday’s election. One, being the fact that Labor Day is on Monday so county auditors’ offices will be closed on the day before the election,” Secretary Mauro said. “Voters need to be sure if they are voting absentee to get those ballots postmarked before election day to ensure they are counted. Voters will need to also check with their auditors for poll hours on election day as these may vary depending on the school district.” The majority of polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Others may open at noon, so voters should check with their county auditor on exact polling hours. Contact information for county auditors’ offices can be found at www.sos.state.ia.us/elections/auditors/auditorslist.html. A voter’s polling location for school elections may not be the same as their location for other elections. Secretary Mauro encourages voters who are unsure to check with their county auditor’s office. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail and to vote an absentee ballot at the county auditor’s office is tomorrow, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. Voters may also drop off completed ballots at their local county auditor’s office on election day before the polls close at 8 p.m. Those who are not registered to vote, and who want to vote on election day, may do so at their designated polling location. Eligible voters will need to provide photo identification and proof of their current residency. An Iowa driver’s license or non-driver ID card with a photo and expiration date is one form of identification. Other acceptable forms are listed on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.state.ia.us/elections/voterinformation/voterregistration.html#2. Additional information for voters and candidates can be found by contacting the local county auditor’s office or by visiting the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.state.ia.us, or by calling the Iowa Secretary of State’s office at 515-281-0145 (toll-free at 1-888-SOS-VOTE). ### |
