Capitol Youth Day

On March 10 and April 8, 2009, 700 middle school and 500 high school students participated in Capitol Youth Day (CYD). CYD is an annual event at the State Capitol for students and their teachers in grades 6-12. CYD promotes civic participation and a better understanding of the government process. The Secretary of State's Office co-hosted this event with the Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council.

During CYD, students had the opportunity to meet with available statewide elected officials and state legislators. They also watched the legislative process in action from the House and Senate galleries. Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro spoke to the students about the pillars of character, and Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad spoke about becoming civically involved. Everyone attending CYD also received a complimentary lunch provided by Anderson Erickson Dairy, Fareway, Hy-Vee and Prairie Meadows.
